Circle Singing

with Live Music

Improvisational community singing experience

"Unpack and express the mind-body-voice connection in non-linear, creative and insightful ways"

- Kate Smith

Circle singing is a collaborative musical practice where a facilitator leads participants in the creation of improvised songs using vocal loops. Through layering melodies, rhythms, bass lines and harmonies, the song constantly transforms, offering spaces for singers to contribute their own unique expressions in the creative process. Drawing on diverse vocal traditions, circle singing offers a safe and playful space for individuals to engage in spontaneous musical dialogue, regardless of their skill level, promoting joyful connection and sense of community.

Kate Smith is a singer and facilitator with a mission to foster creative community wherever she goes through embodiment, play, and improvisation. In these two special sessions, we will also be accompanied by live music from Filipe Sousa, on percussion, electronics and keys.

Open to everyone who has any kind of relationship with singing and / or improvisation

  • "During the class, I felt I could really embody myself in a natural way. I didn’t feel like I was struggling to adapt to a class or really intense constructs of how my body is supposed to move or how my voice is supposed to sound. I felt incredibly free, but also peaceful at the same time. Thank you!"

A word from Kate:

I work with people to understand and experience their voice in connection to their body, using movement, awareness, and improvisation. For me, singing, sounding, or speaking in an embodied way entails addressing the whole system from a phenomenological perspective - exploring our felt experience of body/voice functions, breath, nervous system, co-regulation, creative and imaginative expression, and more. While not explicitly a therapeutic practice, addressing the mind-body connection invariably brings up a range of interesting learning axes that touch on movement and thought habits, prior conditioning, cultural contexts, inter-relational aspects, and more. Meanwhile, working with improvisation allows people to unpack and express the mind-body-voice connection in non-linear, creative and insightful ways.
