Debunking 4 myths that are holding you back from unleashing your full voice

Welcome Voice Explorers! Are you ready to turn the paradigm on its head?

Course Syllabus:

1st Myth: January 28th

Control
This myth tells us that what’s getting in the way of perfection is our lack of ability to control our voice and make it do what we want it to. When we bust this myth, we’ll realize that it's only when we give up the pursuit of control that the really interesting learning can begin!

2nd Myth: February 4th

Objectification
This myth tells us that we can control our body like a machine, by moving certain parts consciously. When we bust this myth, we’ll discover that we are not machines, but rather complex (and sometimes mystifying) systems. When we look at the body as a whole, we’ll see the pivotal role our self-image plays in how we sing!

3rd Myth: February 11th

Effort
This myth tells us that we are never enough, that we have to work hard, feel the burn, and push ourselves to our limits, in order to improve. When we bust this myth, we’ll learn to let go of outcomes, embrace the unknown, and start to enjoy finding the path of least resistance!

4th Myth:
February 18th

Judgement
This myth tells us that fear and strict discipline achieve excellence. When we bust this myth, we’ll learn about the influence of the nervous system on the brain’s ability to learn new information. Only when we feel safe do we really start to make gains!

In this four week online course, we will tackle the four unspoken assumptions of voice study that get in the way of singing with ease and authenticity.

We are going to look at how you learn, how you navigate your physical-mental biological system (aka. body), and it’s not through repetition of scales, it’s not through fear and judgement, it’s not even through top-down instruction!

Instead, we are going to learn to learn from the “body up”. We’ll work with neuroscience of the brain, primal functions of the body, and our innate intelligence. We will touch on anatomy, psychology, arts practice, and life practice.

All of this to begin to correct our culture's original sin - the separation of mind and body. I like to add voice to the mix. Do you recall how as a young child there were no distinctions - between expression, movement, sounding, learning, exploring, being? It takes some unlearning and stripping back to rediscover that integration, but with practice and curiosity we can access moments of flow where the distinctions between mind-body-voice melt away, and we live joyfully in the present.

And along the way, we might just discover that when we approach our voices, and our bodies, from this new upside-down perspective, a whole lot else shifts as well! We experience more self-connection and compassion, more direct access to presence, improved confidence, and enlivened creativity.

It’s time to meet your real voice.

The Embodied Voice approach brings the scientific understanding of the body and voice into a space of embodied learning by exploring concepts through our own movement and vocalization. It’s not a dogma and it’s not a magic pill - it’s about reclaiming our inherent bodily wisdom.
